Coaching · Starting a Business & Self-Employment

From business idea to a viable next step.

A business idea is a beginning. What matters is whether it can become a viable venture. If you want to become self-employed or are facing entrepreneurial decisions, we work through the open questions in a structured way and turn your idea into a clearer basis for the next steps.

Perhaps you are thinking

I have a business idea, but I don't know yet whether it can work, or how.

I want to work for myself, but doing what exactly?

I'm not sure who would actually buy what I offer.

There are so many open questions that I don't know where to start.

Going self-employed raises a lot of questions: Is the idea concrete enough? Who will buy it? Which problem does it actually solve? What does the market look like? What sets it apart from what already exists? Which next steps make sense? In coaching we work through these questions one after another instead of all at once.

Where the coaching can help

From your personal starting point to preparing for the business plan.

Personal and professional starting point

Starting a business is not just a financial decision. It also involves your experience, skills, resources, appetite for risk and personal circumstances. So we first look at where you stand and what your venture needs from you.

Developing and sharpening the business idea

An idea doesn't have to be perfect on day one, but it should become more concrete: Who will use it? Which problem does it solve? What concrete benefit does the customer get? What exactly are you offering?

Analysing market and target group together

A business idea doesn't become viable just because you like it. What matters is whether there is a relevant need and which customers you can actually reach. That is why a joint market and target-group analysis can be part of the coaching.

Structuring the next steps

Many ventures don't stall for lack of motivation, but because too many questions are tackled at once. In coaching we prioritise and structure the next steps.

Preparing for a business plan

Once the basic questions are clear, I support you in preparing for the further development of your business plan: structuring information, testing assumptions, making open questions visible. The business plan itself has to be based on the actual economic and legal requirements of your venture and checked by specialists where needed.

Preparing for key conversations

Whether it is a bank, the employment agency, the Jobcenter, a tax adviser or potential partners: we clarify what you want to achieve in these conversations, which questions you need to ask and how to present your venture clearly.

What you can expect

The coaching is not meant to create false certainty. It is meant to help you ask better questions, test your assumptions and base your decisions on firmer ground. By the end of a coaching phase you should, for example, be clearer about:

  • What do I want to offer?
  • For whom?
  • Which problem do I solve?
  • Why would someone pay for it?
  • What do I still need to check?
  • What is the sensible next step?

Important note

Coaching does not replace professional tax, legal, or financial advice.

Any funding or start-up grant (Gründungszuschuss) also depends on your individual circumstances and on the decision of the responsible office. The coaching can support you in structuring your venture and preparing for the next steps.

How the coaching works

Intro call

First we clarify what it is about for you and what you want to achieve. Free, 20 minutes, no obligation.

Focus

We decide which question or challenge actually matters most right now.

Working on your situation

We look not only at the problem, but also at ways of thinking, decisions, options for action and the conditions under which change is meant to happen.

Next steps

Insight should not end with a good conversation. Where it makes sense, it turns into concrete next steps.

What you bring: your idea as it stands, even if it is only a rough thought or the wish for more independence. Notes, first figures or drafts are helpful, but not required.

Who is this coaching for?

A good fit if you

are developing a business idea

are planning to become self-employed

want to sharpen your business idea

want to understand your target group better

want to look at the market more systematically

are facing important decisions about starting a business

want to structure your next steps

want to prepare for drawing up a business plan

Not the right setting

Tax, legal and financial questions: legal form, taxes, contracts, financing and the financial plan belong with a tax adviser, a lawyer or financial specialists. In coaching you can prepare the questions for those conversations.

A finished business plan: I do not write the plan for you. I support you in preparing it; writing it is up to you and, where needed, specialists.

Guarantees of success: nobody can promise in advance whether a venture will work in the market. Coaching helps you see risks earlier and decide more deliberately.

Why work with me?

I am self-employed myself and have built my own offers, including the coaching platform Mentonovo. So I know the questions that come with starting out from my own experience, not just from coaching. For founders and entrepreneurs there is also a dedicated intensive programme within the speaking training, for pitches and conversations with customers or investors.

On top of that come more than 20 years of coaching practice across Europe and the Gulf and further training in areas such as leadership and business coaching and systemic counselling.

Not a standard program

The five coaching areas are there for orientation, and many situations overlap. A career change can raise questions about personal development, decisions and how you come across, all at once. A new leadership role combines communication, decision making and personal confidence. And starting a business is often both, a professional and a personal change. That is why coaching does not start from the category, but from your actual situation.

If you know that you want to clarify, change or decide something, that is enough for a first conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Will you write my business plan?

No. I support you in preparing it: we clarify the idea, the target group and the market, test assumptions and make open questions visible. You draw up the business plan yourself, and the financial part and legal questions should be checked by specialists.

Can I fund the coaching through a grant or the start-up subsidy?

That depends on your individual circumstances. Whether funding or a start-up subsidy (Gründungszuschuss) is granted is decided by the responsible office, for example the employment agency or the Jobcenter. I cannot promise it. So check the requirements directly with them. You can prepare for that conversation in coaching.

I don't have a concrete idea yet. Is it too early?

No. If you know you want to work for yourself but not yet doing what, we start from your experience, skills and interests and develop possible directions from them.

Do you help with legal form, taxes or financing?

No, that is the job of tax advisers, lawyers and financial specialists. But in coaching you can work out which questions to ask them and prepare for those conversations.

Do you also work with people after they have started?

Yes. Once your business is up and running you keep facing decisions, for example about your offer, your customers or your priorities. We can keep working on these in coaching.

Have a business idea, or planning to go self-employed?

Then we don't start with a finished business plan. We start by asking whether your idea is clear enough and which questions need answering first.
