A subject chosen by your family: carry on or switch?

When your degree wasn't your choice: signs, questions to reflect on, and how decision coaching clarifies options and the family conversation.

Study and work

You are studying what your family considers sensible, such as medicine, law or engineering, and feel more and more clearly that your interest lies elsewhere.

How it can show up

  • You pass your exams, but without any interest.
  • In your free time you are drawn to something quite different.
  • You picture working life in this field and feel empty.
  • You are afraid of wasting what your family has invested.

Questions for you

There are no right answers. Take the question that stays with you.

  • What do you like about your subject, even if it is not much?
  • What interests you so much that you spend time on it voluntarily?
  • What worries your family when they think about a switch?
  • Is there a way to combine parts of both directions?

Where coaching can help

In decision coaching we look at the options soberly: carry on, adjust your focus, switch or combine. And we prepare the conversation with your family so that your reasons are understood.

When other help fits better

For questions about switching subjects, credit recognition and funding, university advice services are the right place to go.

If it is too much right now

Coaching is not psychotherapy and not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact the emergency services where you are right away, or a crisis service near you.

Want to talk it through?

In a free 20-minute intro call we look at whether coaching is the right way to work on this for you. If it is not, I will tell you so.
