Unequal opportunities: when background and money decide

Opportunities depend on background, money or connections? What that does to you, questions to reflect on and what coaching can and cannot do here.

Society and culture

You see that opportunities are unequally distributed, by background, money or connections. It makes you angry and sometimes disheartened.

How it can show up

  • You see that some people achieve more with less effort because they have more money or connections.
  • The feeling that rules don't apply equally to everyone makes you angry.
  • You wonder whether effort is worth it at all.
  • You feel powerless against large structures.

Questions for you

There are no right answers. Take the question that stays with you.

  • Where have you experienced injustice yourself, and what did it do to you?
  • Which area matters to you so much that you want to stand up for it?
  • What is in your hands, and what is not?
  • With whom could you make a difference together?

What coaching can do

Coaching cannot fix social injustice. It can help you clarify your own room for action without playing down the conditions.

When other help fits better

Getting involved in associations, initiatives or advocacy groups can give your anger a direction. For concrete disadvantage, anti-discrimination services can help.

If it is too much right now

Coaching is not psychotherapy and not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact the emergency services where you are right away, or a crisis service near you.
