Overthinking: from going round in circles to a decision

When thinking takes the place of acting: signs, questions to reflect on, and how coaching gives decisions a structure.

What goes on inside

You go over decisions and conversations again and again, play through every option and still get nowhere. Thinking takes the place of acting.

How it can show up

  • You keep researching before you decide.
  • After conversations you replay what you should have said.
  • You ask lots of people for advice and end up less sure than before.
  • Simple decisions cost you a disproportionate amount of energy.

Questions for you

There are no right answers. Take the question that stays with you.

  • Which question are you thinking about most right now, and what exactly would you need to decide?
  • Which piece of information would really change your decision?
  • What is the worst that would happen with the second-best choice?
  • Which step could you take in the next 48 hours to find out something new?

Where coaching can help

Coaching brings structure to your thinking: what is really up for decision, what information is still missing, what is the criterion? Then it is about a first step that brings new experience rather than more thoughts.

When other help fits better

If the brooding hardly lets go of you, keeps you from sleeping or circles around worries with no concrete cause, talk to a licensed psychotherapist.

If it is too much right now

Coaching is not psychotherapy and not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact the emergency services where you are right away, or a crisis service near you.

Want to talk it through?

In a free 20-minute intro call we look at whether coaching is the right way to work on this for you. If it is not, I will tell you so.
