Faith and everyday life: when religious values and reality clash

What you believe and what work, university or friends demand don't always fit? Questions to reflect on and who can help you with this tension.

Society and culture

What you believe and what your daily life demands don't always fit together, for example at work, at university or among friends. That can be unsettling.

How it can show up

  • At work, at university or among friends there are situations that clash with your values.
  • You feel torn between fitting in and your convictions.
  • You don't like explaining your stance for fear of being misunderstood.
  • You put off some decisions because no option feels fully right.

Questions for you

There are no right answers. Take the question that stays with you.

  • Which of your values are non-negotiable for you?
  • In which situation is the balancing act hardest?
  • Who could help you clarify a religious question about it?
  • Which solution would do justice to both your values and your daily life?

What coaching can do

Coaching does not answer questions of faith. When it comes to concrete decisions you want to make in line with your values, coaching can help.

When other help fits better

For religious questions, talking to a religious adviser or scholar you trust is the right way.

If it is too much right now

Coaching is not psychotherapy and not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact the emergency services where you are right away, or a crisis service near you.
