Fear of death and the unknown: who can help
Thoughts of death, illness or an uncertain future keep coming back? Questions to reflect on, and when a doctor, therapist or spiritual counsellor can help.
Thoughts of death, illness or an uncertain future keep coming back and frighten you.
How it can show up
- Thoughts of death or serious illness come uninvited.
- You are very afraid of uncertain situations.
- You need a lot of control to feel safe.
- The fear keeps you awake at night or stops you from doing things.
Questions for you
There are no right answers. Take the question that stays with you.
- Since when have these thoughts occupied you so strongly?
- Was there an experience that triggered them?
- What gives you support in uncertain times?
- With whom could you talk about it, a doctor, a therapist or a spiritual adviser?
What coaching can do
This is not a topic coaching is meant for.
When other help fits better
If the fear limits your daily life or keeps you awake at night, talk to a doctor or a licensed psychotherapist. For existential and religious questions, talking to a chaplain or religious adviser can also help.
If it is too much right now
Coaching is not psychotherapy and not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact the emergency services where you are right away, or a crisis service near you.
