Overinvolved parents: gaining independence respectfully

When parents still decide a lot for you: signs, questions to reflect on, and how coaching prepares conversations about boundaries.

Family and the people around you

You are an adult, but your parents still have a say in where you go, who you spend time with or how you spend your money. Often out of love and worry, and still you can't breathe.

How it can show up

  • At home you only tell part of the story to avoid discussions.
  • You have to justify small decisions.
  • You feel guilty when you do something without checking first.
  • Your parents talk about your future as if it were theirs.

Questions for you

There are no right answers. Take the question that stays with you.

  • In which areas does your parents' opinion matter to you, and where do you want to decide alone?
  • What are they afraid of when they get involved?
  • What could be a first area where you take on more responsibility?
  • How would you start if you raised it at a calm moment?

Where coaching can help

Coaching helps you clarify where you need more independence and prepare conversations in which you set boundaries without damaging the relationship.

When other help fits better

If control comes with threats, surveillance or violence, a counselling service or, in an emergency, the police is the right way. For deadlocked conflicts involving the whole family there is family counselling.

If it is too much right now

Coaching is not psychotherapy and not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact the emergency services where you are right away, or a crisis service near you.
