Depending on others' approval: becoming more independent

Your mood depends on whether others get in touch or agree with you? Signs, questions to reflect on and where coaching helps with your own decisions.

What goes on inside

Your mood depends heavily on whether certain people get in touch, like you or agree with you. Deciding on your own is hard.

How it can show up

  • When someone doesn't get in touch, you are restless all day.
  • For small decisions you ask others for their opinion first.
  • You rarely say no, for fear of losing someone.
  • Your plans often follow other people's plans.

Questions for you

There are no right answers. Take the question that stays with you.

  • What would you decide if you couldn't ask anyone?
  • What exactly are you afraid of when you think about distance?
  • What is good for you that depends only on you?
  • Where would you like to make a decision of your own first?

Where coaching can help

Coaching can help you notice your own wishes again, set boundaries and make decisions without first asking everyone for permission.

When other help fits better

If the fear of being left is very strong, or relationships keep putting you in great distress, working with a psychotherapist is the right setting.

If it is too much right now

Coaching is not psychotherapy and not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact the emergency services where you are right away, or a crisis service near you.
