Emigrating for lack of prospects: thinking the decision through

Thinking of emigrating because you see no prospects, or already gone? Signs, questions to reflect on and where coaching can help with the decision.

Study and work

You are thinking about emigrating, less out of a sense of adventure than for lack of prospects. Or you have already left and are struggling with what you left behind.

How it can show up

  • You regularly look at jobs or study places abroad.
  • The decision feels more like escape than a new beginning.
  • You are afraid of leaving and of staying.
  • After a move you miss more than you expected.

Questions for you

There are no right answers. Take the question that stays with you.

  • What do you want to get away from, and where do you want to go?
  • What would have to change for staying to be a real option?
  • What do you already know about life in the new place, and what only by hearsay?
  • Whom could you ask who has already taken this step?

Where coaching can help

Decision and career coaching can help you weigh the decision carefully and, after a move, plan your professional fresh start.

When other help fits better

For visas, residence and recognition of qualifications you need qualified advice, for example from official bodies or migration advice services. If homesickness or loss weigh heavily, psychotherapeutic support can help.

If it is too much right now

Coaching is not psychotherapy and not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact the emergency services where you are right away, or a crisis service near you.
