Sleep problems: lying awake or always exhausted
Lying awake at night, or sleeping a lot and still exhausted? How sleep problems can show up, and why seeing a doctor is the right first step.
You lie awake at night going over things, or you sleep a lot and are still exhausted. Either can change your whole day.
How it can show up
- You lie awake for a long time at night with your thoughts going round.
- You wake up in the night and can't get back to sleep.
- You sleep for a very long time and are still tired all day.
- Your sleep has changed, and it has been like this for weeks.
Questions for you
There are no right answers. Take the question that stays with you.
- Since when have you been sleeping differently?
- Did something change in your life around that time?
- What do you do in the last hour before going to bed?
- When could you talk to a doctor about it?
When other help fits better
Ongoing sleep problems should be seen by a doctor first. A doctor can check for physical causes and recommend further help if needed.
What coaching can do
Coaching is not the first place to go for sleep problems. If your sleep suffers from work pressure or open decisions, coaching can work on those causes once medical reasons have been checked.
If it is too much right now
Coaching is not psychotherapy and not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact the emergency services where you are right away, or a crisis service near you.
