Dependent on your partner: when everything revolves around them
Your mood and self-worth depend almost entirely on your partner? How intense dependence shows up, and why a psychotherapist is the right first step.
Your day, your mood and your self-worth revolve almost entirely around the other person. Without them you feel lost, and the fear of losing them is always there.
How it can show up
- Your mood depends almost entirely on how your partner behaves.
- You have given up friendships and hobbies for the relationship.
- Even a short silence frightens you a lot.
- You stay even though the relationship is not good for you.
Questions for you
There are no right answers. Take the question that stays with you.
- Who were you before this relationship began, and what of that do you miss?
- What do you fear when you think of life without this person?
- Is there control, threats or pressure in the relationship?
- Who could support you in finding professional help?
When other help fits better
If a relationship dominates you so much that you suffer, a licensed psychotherapist is the right person to see. If the relationship involves control or violence, contact a service against violence.
What coaching can do
Coaching is not the right first step here. Once you feel more stable, it can help you rebuild your own goals and interests.
If it is too much right now
Coaching is not psychotherapy and not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact the emergency services where you are right away, or a crisis service near you.
